Pressure Test

  1. Locate the vehicle air conditioner’s low-side service port and remove the protective cap. The low-side service port is located between the evaporator and the compressor and is the only port that this gauge will fit. The evaporator is located either behind the dashboard or in the engine compartment close to the bulkhead.
  2. Start the engine and turn air conditioner to maximum cooling. Determine if the compressor clutch isengaged and the compressor is running. If not engaged, add one can of refrigerant (see below). If thecompressor still does not engage, the problem must be corrected before adding additional refrigerant. Allow the air conditioner to run for three minutes.
  3. Attach the hose to the low-side service port by pulling back the quick-coupler sleeve and pushing the fitting ontothe low-side service port and then pushing the sleeve forward to lock into position. The pressure may be tested with or without a can of refrigerant connected to the recharge can-tap. A back pressure valve prevents refrigerant from escaping.
  4. Check the pressure chart. (Ambient temperature refers to the air temperature surrounding the air conditioner).
  5. Remove the pressure gauge and hose assembly from the vehicle’s service port. Add refrigerant if needed and/or make necessary repairs.

Adding Refrigerant

  1. Turn the dispensing valve handle anti-clockwise until the piercing pin is in the up position. This will prevent the premature piercing of the 134a can.
  2. Shake can and then screw the dispensing valve onto the top of the 134a refrigerant cap.
  3. Locate the vehicle air conditioner’s low-side service port and remove protective cap. (See Step 1 under Pressure Test).
  4. Start engine and turn air conditioner to maximum cooling.
  5. Attach the hose to the low-side service port by pulling back the quick-couple sleeve and pushing the fitting onto the low-side service port and then pushing the sleeve forward to lock into position.
  6. Turn the dispensing valve handle clockwise until you hear the piercing stem puncture the refrigerant can.
  7. Turn the valve handle anti-clockwise until you hear the refrigerant leaving the can.
  8. Holding the can upright, charge the system in accordance with the instructions supplied with the refrigerant can.

CAUTION: ALWAYS WEAR CLOTH-LINED GLOVES AND SAFETY GOGGLES

Check & Charge Hose

The charge hose with in-line gauge allows the low side pressures of the air conditioner to be checked. The following chart offers a general guide to correct low side pressures at given ambient temperatures, when the air conditioner is switched on and has been running for at least 3 minutes. These are indicated by the blue areas on the gauge:

Ambient Temp (ºC) Low side pressure Kg/cm²
to 20ºC 1.75 – 2.5 Kg/cm²
25ºC 2.5 – 3.0 Kg/cm²
30-40ºC 3.0 – 3.8 Kg/cm²

The colour code on the gauge shows these guidelines in the following simplified terms:

Colour Indication
Green Refrigerant is low. Could also indicate a faulty expansion valve
Blue Refrigerant is full and does not require topping up.
Yellow System requires professional intervention
Red Danger. Do not attempt to work on the system. Take the vehicle to a professional technician trained in air conditioning service work

Refrigerant should only be added if the gauge reading is in the green area.

This product will only indicate the low side pressure. Correct diagnosis can be achieved only by monitoring both high and
low side pressures, and vent temperatures, and by using professional equipment. If you are in any doubt do not use this
product.
